I grew up in the California's North Bay Area and attended the University of California at Berkeley in the mid 1980s, where I sadly found a shockingly large number of self-identified young Republicans in the mix. Fortunately, radical progressivism was and is still very much alive and well in and around campus.I marched against the first Iraq war, helped organize legal resistance to the dismantling of KPFA in 1999, and have done phone-banking and canvassing for any number of progressive campaigns. I became much more active in the primary cycle leading up to the Democratic Primary of 2016, where I lead teams of canvassers in Iowa, Nevada and at home in California. I helped co-found the now-retired Rock The Congress PAC in the spring of 2017, which successfully mounted four full-day regional organizing conferences attended by hundreds of organizing leaders each time. I take great pride in the fact that my 10-year-old daughter thinks it is a normal and everyday thing to attend organizing meetings, marches, and city council meetings.I am an ongoing member of the National Network Assembly's weekly huddle team, and am currently attending Swell Collective's "Facilitators Academy" with some of the most amazing people doing movement organizing on the ground, all around the country. I support #blacklivesmatter and #abolition over #defund, and am unabashedly socialist and unapologetically ready for a new government, created by founding mothers and others, and explicitly formed in service of the creation of a fully just and compassionate world that not only includes but warmly welcomes humans of all shapes, sizes, colors and genders, actively fighting off binary classifications and oppression.
